How to Use Freewriting to Boost Your Blogging Productivity

Freewriting is the practice of writing without any real rules, and writing whatever comes to your mind. It has also been called "stream of consciousness writing" and is referred to as "morning pages" by some.

Freewriting may seem like a waste to some people, because as you write, you're not really focused on writing that will be published on your blog, you're just writing.

But the value that this relaxed form of writing brings to a blog is that it removes all of the stress and pressure associated with writing, and because of that, often leads to greater creativity and the reduction of writer's block.

The reason that I think that freewriting is tremendously helpful for bloggers is because if you get into the habit of doing this regularly, you'll find that you never have a shortage of blog post ideas.

What I recommend is that you spend a certain amount of time each day freewriting. I would suggest anywhere from 10 - 20 minutes per day works well. In fact, determining how long each session will last and setting a timer is the only real rule for this practice, in my opinion.

Some suggest that all stream of consciousness writing be done with a paper and pen, but for myself I find that doing it on a computer works well. The bottom line is to experiment and figure out what works for you.

What you'll likely find is that much of what you produce in this stream of consciousness style of writing will actually be the basis for your blog posts.

Sure, since the writing is so relaxed and informal, you may find that you need to clean it up quite a bit, but taking a piece of writing and cleaning it up and turning that into a blog post is certainly a lot easier than starting from scratch, while looking at a blank Word document.

Give this style of writing a try to see if it boosts your blogging productivity. I think you'll find that you never run out of blog post ideas if you implement freewriting into your daily routine.
